A report from England on Monday suggests that Liverpool may opt against replacing the recently departed Georginio Wijnaldum.
Wijnaldum departs Liverpool
After five years at the club, Georginio Wijnaldum’s Liverpool stint has finally come to an end.
The midfielder joined the Reds from Newcastle in 2016, and went on to become a key cog in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.
The now 30-year-old notched 237 appearances for Liverpool, and was instrumental in the club securing their 6th Champions League, and first-ever Premier League title.
Even this past season, when the majority of Liverpool’s players – including Jordan Henderson and Fabinho – were forced onto the sidelines with injury, Wijnaldum remained one of the few constants for the Merseysiders.
Despite his importance to Klopp’s system, though, the Dutchman has now departed Liverpool, joining PSG on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract:
Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to announce the transfer of Georginio Wijnaldum.
Arriving from Liverpool, the Netherlands international midfielder has signed with the club from the French capital until 30 June 2024.#WelcomeGini https://t.co/OQDEO1lbJg

Will Liverpool sign a replacement midfielder?
On the back of Wijnaldum sealing his Liverpool exit, the Premier League outfit have been linked with a number of central midfielders, including Florian Neuhaus and Youri Tielemans.
However, a report from The Athletic on Monday suggests that the Reds are not currently in the market for a central midfielder:
Senior Anfield sources insist they aren’t currently in the market for a midfielder.
Who, then, will take Wijnaldum’s place in the middle of the park?
The aforementioned source confirms that Fabinho will play in midfield a lot more next season, whilst Jordan Henderson should also be back fit.
Elsewhere, Thiago is expected to play a much bigger role, with Curtis Jones too guaranteed more minutes.
