Austria secured their place in the knockout stages of the European Championships for the first time with a 1-0 win over Ukraine, who face a nervy wait to find out if they will join them in the last 16.

The Burschen qualify as runners-up in group C, while Ukraine will have to wait and see if they will advance as one of the four best third-place teams.

Austria took the lead midway through the first half when Christoph Baumgartner’s studs met David Alaba’s corner, and his improvised effort was enough to beat George Bushchan in the Ukraine net.

Marko Arnautovic missed a glorious opportunity to double the lead just before half-time, but skewed substitute Alessandro Schopf’s cross wide.

Franco Foda’s men largely kept Ukraine at bay until the closing stages. Roman Yaremchuk’s low effort sailed just wide of Daniel Bachmann’s goal, but Austria held on to secure their place in the knockout stages.

Let’s get into some player ratings…

George Bushchan (GK) – 6/10 – Largely dealt with everything thrown at him.

Alexander Karavaev (RB) – 4/10 – Had a touch time dealing with Austria’s attackers and Alaba, while offered little help going forward.

Illia Zabarnyi (CB) – 5/10 – Wasn’t his fault the team couldn’t build from deep.

Mykola Matviyenko (CB) – 6/10 – Ditto.

Vitalii Mykolenko (LB) – 4/10 – Likewise with Karavaev, did little to help at either end.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, Christoph Baumgartner

Serhiy Sydorchuk (DM) – 5/10 – Couldn’t create, control or defend to a high enough standard for Ukraine to have a foothold.

Mykola Shaparenko (CM) – 6/10 – Made some smart runs but ultimately couldn’t create enough.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (CM) – 5/10 – You wouldn’t believe this was the one player on the pitch that starts for Manchester City.

Andriy Yarmolenko

Andriy Yarmolenko (RW) – 4/10 – Pocketed by Alaba with ease.

Roman Yaremchuk (CF) – 5/10 – Terribly isolated and was rarely involved.

Ruslan Malinovsky (LW) – 5/10 – Was nullified and tried moving infield to no effect, hooked at half-time.

Viktor Tsygankov – 5/10 – Came on at half-time but failed to deliver.

Marlos – N/A

Artem Biesiedin – N/A

David Alaba

Daniel Bachmann (GK) – 6/10 – Hardly faced a bombardment of chances but was commanding whenever necessary.

Stefan Lainer (RB) – 6/10 – Was productive, if a bit stiff.

Aleksandar Dragovic (CB) – 6/10 – A bit sloppy on the ball but defensively solid.

Martin Hinteregger (CB) – 7/10 – Calm and composed, set the tone at the back.

David Alaba (LB) – 9/10 – Quite obviously the best player on the pitch by some distance. Pocketed Yarmolenko and was Austria’s main threat going forward.

Marcel Sabitzer

Xaver Schlager (CM) – 7/10 – Controlled in midfield and made decent runs to hurt Ukraine.

Florian Grillitsch (CM) – 6/10 – A bit slow and ponderous, but was rarely ever in trouble.

Marcel Sabitzer (AM) – 7/10 – The heartbeat of the team, should probably have had a goal for his efforts.

Marko Arnautovic

Konrad Laimer (RW) – 6/10 – While primarily a defensive player, did okay in attacking areas.

Marko Arnautovic (CF) – 5/10 – Hardly a convincing performance from the returning striker.

Christoph Baumgartner (LW) – 8/10 – Was always probing and asking questions of Ukraine. Good value for his goal, but was substituted before half-time with an injury.

Alessandro Schopf – 6/10 – Was useful without ever being too much of a difference-maker.

Stefan Ilsanker – N/A

Sasa Kalajdzic – N/A
