Danny Welbeck to stay at Brighton for another season

Now 30 years old, Danny Welbeck has had an injury-ravaged career.

Beginning his footballing education at Manchester United, Welbeck turned out 142 times for the Red Devils, scoring 29 times in those games.

However, he was reduced to a bit-part player, and eventually moved to rivals Arsenal in September 2014.

Welbeck became something of a cult hero at the Emirates stadium but was plagued by injuries, making 126 appearances across five years in North London but many of them from the bench.

As a consequence, he was released by The Gunners, joining Watford, before they too released him a season later.

However, Welbeck found his feet somewhat when Brighton and Hove Albion took a punt on the free agent, offering him a one year deal two weeks after his release by the Hornets.

Injury again disrupted the England international’s season, but he made an impressive 24 Premier League appearances for the Seagulls, netting six times.

This return was good enough to see him finish as Brighton’s second top goalscorer, behind Neil Maupay.

And this form has seen the Englishman rewarded with a new one year deal, which will keep him on the south-east coast until the summer of 2022.

It could prove to be a difficult summer for the Seagulls, with several key players having been linked with moves away. Yves Bissouma has been linked with a move to Liverpool, while Ben White is rumoured to be close to a move to Welbeck’s old club Arsenal.

To make matters worse, Tariq Lamptey has been igniting the interest of managerless Tottenham Hotspur, if the papers are to be believed.
