Varane’s Madrid future
Raphael Varane joined Real Madrid in 2011, departing French outfit Lens for a fee believed to be around £9m.
Varane was only 18 years of age when he made the move to the Bernabeu, so £9m, at the time, looked a fairly considerable sum.
However, he has since gone on to establish himself as a key cog in Madrid’s backline.
All told, the Frenchman has notched up 360 appearances across all competitions for Real, playing a pivotal role in their recent domestic and Champions League success.
However, Varane’s future in the Spanish capital now appears to be up in the air.
This comes with the stopper having just one year to run on his contract, and reports earlier this year having suggested that Los Blancos are not expecting their defensive star to renew his deal.
Man United & Varane
On the back of this news, Manchester United have been one of the sides most heavily linked with the 28-year-old.
United’s need for centre-back reinforcements has been quite clear for some time now.
Harry Maguire is the Red Devils’ only really quality centre-half, with Victor Lindelof simply not good enough to be such a regular starter in United’s side.
So, signing a partner for Maguire this summer should probably be one of Man United’s top priorities.
And in their pursuit of Varane, they do look to have been handed a boost.
The Athletic report that Madrid are increasingly resigned to losing Varane and that the Frenchman’s representatives are understood to have informed the Madrid hierarchy that the player desires a fresh challenge.
It is added that whilst Chelsea and Manchester City have informal interest but that United are the club most likely to try to do a deal.
In terms of a fee for Varane, it is speculated that £40-45m could be enough to do a deal:
