Which coaches are left for Spurs after latest Julen Lopetegui rejection?

Lopetegui rejects Spurs

Sevilla’s club president Jose Castro has revealed that Tottenham had made a “dizzying” offer to their head coach Julen Lopetegui.

Lopetegui helped Sevilla become part of the La Liga title race last season and progress from their Champions League group having won the Europa League the year prior.

Speaking with Spanish radio Cadena SER he said the Lopetegui had told him about the Spurs bid.

“Julen rang me and told me,” said Castro.

“Some coaches are more driven by economic factors but Julen is very clear that he is happy here and he even said it would be very difficult to find a better place to work than here.

“We believed and believe in him, giving him a two-year contract extension, and I’m sure he will bring much more to the club.”

Sevilla managed to earn the return of famous talent spotter Monchi a couple of years ago and since the club has prospered bringing in some transformative players helping them to the level they are now. Lopetegui and Monchi appear a perfect pair in taking the club forward.

Who is left for Spurs?

Having now had Antonio Conte, Paolo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso fall through, Spurs face a dilemma.

Having brought in Paratici from Juventus, there is seemingly a focus with Fonseca and Gattuso on coaches who have worked in Serie A. However, the interest in Lopetegui clearly shows they are now broadening their search parameters.

The likes of Eddie Howe, Nuno Espirito Santo and Graham Potter have all been touted with the role.

Ryan Mason of course who took charge after Jose Mourinho left was an option but a poor end to the season likely ruled out that possibility.

Ultimately the options out in the field are difficult to see guaranteed success with the club. Nuno comes off the back of his worst season with Wolves where the side lacked invention and cutting edge, granted without Raul Jimenez.

Howe has been out of work since being relegated with Bournemouth and Graham Potter earned survival twice with Brighton despite winning just one home league game in the entirety of 2020.

Whoever Spurs end up with, it looks likely to be a risky appointment and one Daniel Levy will hope doesn’t having look back on the last two sackings with regret.
