An insight into the kind of financial outlay which Arsenal were reportedly willing to sanction to lure Marco Asensio to the club this past summer has been forthcoming on Friday.
Edu and co. hard at work
It of course proved an altogether busy transfer window on the red half of North London.
As the Gunners continue their efforts to close the gap on the rest of English football’s heavyweights, no fewer than six players were brought in to reinforce Mikel Arteta’s ranks.
On the defensive side of things, all of Aaron Ramsdale, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Nuno Tavares and, most notably, Ben White made the move to the Emirates.
In the middle of the park came impressive up-and-comer Sambi Lokonga, whilst Martin Odegaard’s loan arrival from Real Madrid was too made permanent.

Arsenal’s Asensio offer
As outlined above, though, if the latest word stemming from the media on Friday is anything to go by, then Odegaard proved far from the only Real star whom Mikel Arteta and co. expressed a keen interest in this past summer.
The other? Marco Asensio.
As per a report from the reliable PacoJo Delgado of Spanish outlet Cadena SER, Arsenal were one of three clubs, alongside North London rivals Tottenham and Italian giants AC Milan, to have made their interest in Asensio’s signature clear over the last couple of months.
Spurs, for their part, are understood to have made contact with those in a position of power at the Bernabeu to ‘sound out the operation’.
Arsenal, though, took things a step further, going as far as to table a proposal for the 25-year-old, fresh off a hat-trick versus Mallorca this past Wednesday night.
The bid in question is said to have come in at the £34 million mark, but was rebuffed without a 2nd thought by the Real hierarchy.
