The Manchester United U23s’ trip to Everton this evening ended in chaotic scenes, as stars from both sides were sent for early baths.
Elanga makes the difference
Neil Wood’s men were back in Premier League 2 action a short time ago.
The Red Devils made the trip to Haig Avenue for a meeting with Everton, eyeing a return to form on the back of a disappointing opening to the campaign.
And, when all was said and done on Merseyside, United did manage to get back on track, courtesy of a 3-point haul.
A solitary goal proved all that separated the sides upon the full-time whistle sounding, netted by Anthony Elanga inside three minutes.
After being teed up courtesy of some fine work from Shola Shoretire, Swedish attacker Elanga – who also found the net in one of two Premier League appearances for United late last season – made no mistake with a close range finish:

Three sent off
As outlined above, though, it was not Elanga’s winner which in fact proved the main talking point stemming from the action at Haig Avenue on Friday.
This, instead, came in the form of a late melee, which ultimately culminated in a trio of youngsters being dismissed.
The chaos was sparked by the heavily-involved Elanga, who, after hosts Everton were awarded an injury-time free-kick, threw the ball at Charlie Whitaker.
From here, all hell broke loose, as almost every player on the pitch came together in either attempts to rough up the opposition, or deescalate the situation.
The eventual result, upon the dust settling, was no fewer than three red cards being dished out.
Elanga was understandably one of those sent packing, whilst the other player at the heart of the chaotic scenes – Whitaker – was too unable to escape the wrath of the officials.
And last up was United central defender Bjorn Hardley, as an otherwise fairly contested affair on Friday ended in altogether ugly fashion.
🏁 Our #MUAcademy U23s hold on for all three points on Merseyside, despite ending the game with nine men after Bjorn Hardley and Anthony Elanga were both shown red cards.
Everton’s Charlie Whitaker was also sent off following the same incident.#MUFC | #PL2 pic.twitter.com/adohw91qJV
