Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has, on Friday, spoken out over the possibility of Thiago Silva being awarded fresh terms with the club.
Brilliant Blue
Brazilian icon Silva has of course been on the books at Stamford Bridge for a little over 12 months now.
After seeing his contract with French heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain come to an end, the veteran was snapped up by those in a position of power in West London, amid a high-profile recruitment drive.
At the time, eyebrows were raised across the English football landscape, amid concerns that Silva’s best days were firmly behind him.
To say that the former AC Milan stalwart has since firmly silenced such doubters, though, would be something of an understatement.
Silva has established himself as an absolutely integral member of Chelsea’s defensive ranks, shining under the watch of both Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel.
Such starring displays proved central in the Blues securing just their 2nd Champions League title this past May, with the Brazilian’s Man of the Match showing in a London derby showdown with Tottenham last weekend having proven for the umpteenth time that Silva still has plenty left in the tank.

‘On him’
The facts, though, cannot be denied.
By the time his current terms expire at Stamford Bridge next summer, Silva will be approaching the ripe old age of 38.
In turn, speaking during a press conference ahead of his side’s crunch showdown with Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was this evening drawn on whether or not he expects his veteran defender to be handed a fresh contract.
And the German appeared very much open to such a possibility, assuring that, should Silva continue to perform at such a high level, there will be no reason not to keep him around for at least another season:
‘It’s on him. He has to perform at this kind of level and that’s all he needs to stay here.’
‘It’s as easy and clear as that. When you play for Chelsea, you need to deliver and that is what he is doing. He is a top professional and if he wasn’t, it wouldn’t be performing at that level for many years.’
‘The age does not play a role. The only question we have to ask at the end of the season is this: Is he at the level that we need at Chelsea to compete in every competition? We have time for that, and we don’t have to answer that right now.’
