Mikel Arteta vindicated? William Saliba struggles on day Arsenal win big

Arsenal stroll to north London derby success

A first half blitz from Arsenal which saw them score three times handed them a heavy victory over their bitter north London rivals on Sunday afternoon.

Roared on by a jubilant home crowd, Emile Smith Rowe opened the scoring, arriving late to turn in a Bukayo Saka cross. It was then Smith Rowe’s turn to provide for his teammates, finding Aubameyang who made it 2-0 after just 25 minutes.

It got better yet, as Bukayo Saka got his name on the scoresheet before halftime, which saw some Spurs fans refuse to take their seats for the second half.

Although Spurs found a late consolation through Heung-Min Son, they were a well beaten side on the day, and looked to be lacking direction, desire and ideas in what became their third successive defeat, during which time they have conceded 9 goals.

William Saliba performances suggest Arteta was vindicated

One Arsenal player yet to taste a north London derby, or English football at all for that matter, is William Saliba. Signed in 2019, he has found himself loaned out to Ligue 1 sides three times, most recently to Marseilles for the 2021-22 season.

In the Ligue 1 side’s clash with Lens, however, he proved that he still had plenty to learn, turning in one of the worst performances of his career to date.

The defender received the worst rating on his side from GFFN (Get French Football News), scoring just 2/10 and with their analysis making for grim reading:

Worryingly far less decisive both on the ball and in defending than in recent games. It was his naïve pass – one of many – that led to the penalty and he was lazy in covering Said’s run for 3-2.

While Saliba continues to promise much then, another year to improve away from the harsh media spotlight that surrounds Arsenal could well be just what he needed.
