Arsenal and Manchester City duo star in 101’s Team of the Week

It was another pulsating weekend of Premier League action, as five of the top seven Premier League sides dropped points, and Manchester City made up ground on the leaders.

While Solskjear continues to find new things to complain about, his side failed to do enough to overcome Aston Villa, while Liverpool and Brentford played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in an early contender for game of the season.

Elsewhere, Arsenal fired 3 past Tottenham, who seem in freefall after conceding 9 goals in their last 3 games. Pep Guardiola, too, left the weekend smiling, finally getting one over Thomas Tuchel at the fourth time of asking as Manchester City downed Chelsea 1-0.

With so much drama, who made 101‘s Team of the Week?

GK: Emiliano Martinez

It is much for the pure delaying and distracting antics as much as his performance that Emi Martinez makes the cut. Called on to bail his side out of trouble on a couple of occasions, he really came into his own in the dying seconds, when Manchester United were awarded a penalty.

Ahead of the spot-kick, Martinez ensured that pressure was on penalty taker Bruno Fernandes, by demanding that Cristiano Ronaldo take it instead. It seemingly worked too, with Fernandes blazing over the bar.

Martinez, in turn, celebrated in front of the United fans, and Villa took all three points, increasing the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

DF: Kortney Hause

While unlucky to concede the late penalty for handball, it was Kortney Hause that settled the game in Villa’s favour with a bullet header from a corner.

It must have felt even sweeter to the defender, making only his first start of the campaign. Solskjaer was quick to argue that the goal should have been ruled out, and perhaps he had a case, but it will not matter to Hause whatsoever.

DF:  Joao Cancelo

Portuguese defender Joao Cancelo has become an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s side, with his versatility seeing him deployed in a variety of roles.

With Benjamin Mendy suspended on criminal charges, and Oleskander Zinchenko injured, he was stationed at left back against Chelsea, but as usual ended up cropping up all over the pitch.

Having played every minute of Manchester City’s Premier League campaign to date, it is hard to find a more important player to Guardiola’s system.

DF: Ruben Dias

Keeping Romelu Lukaku quiet is no easy feat. Just ask Pablo Mari, or Tyrone Mings, both of whom have failed to do so already this season.

For last season’s Premier League player of the season, however, it was mission accomplished.

Dias kept the Belgian forward quiet, helped to a large degree by Tuchel’s overly conservative tactical setup, and was also on hand to make a fabulous block to prevent Mateo Kovacic from levelling the score.

It was a game that Manchester City simply had to win to stay in touch with the early pace-setters, and they did just that as those around them dropped points.

MF: Bukayo Saka

Wow. It is a testament to the mentality of Arsenal’s biggest prospect that he has bounced back so well following adversity in the Euro 2020 final. It is a testament to his ability that it was he, and not record-signing Nicolas Pepe, that began the north London derby on the right flank.

Along with Emile Smith Rowe (spoiler), the English duo tore Tottenham to shreds in the first half, both recording a goal and an assist in the opening 40 minutes of the encounter.

Arsenal need to ensure that they tie Saka down to a new long term deal in the near future, as he will undoubtedly have other (bigger) clubs sniffing around him should they fail to do so.

MF: Conor Gallagher

Chelsea fans must be sitting at home laughing at the midfielder that they know they will inherit once more next season. Gallagher has impressed for Crystal Palace even before their tie against Brighton, but shone at Selhurst Park on Monday night once more.

Driving into the box, it was Gallagher that won Palace the penalty in first-half stoppage-time that Wilfried Zaha converted, and his all action performance has undoubtedly continued endearing him to the Palace faithful.

MF: Jack Grealish

Saying someone is “worth” 100 million pounds feels an impossible sentiment, but Grealish is beginning to show exactly why Manchester City splashed that amount on him already.

Netting on his Champions League debut, Grealish turned in another top quality performance against Chelsea, despite not registering a goal or assist.

He tormented Reece James and, when he went off injured, Cesar Azpilicueta down Chelsea’s right-hand side, and has slotted seamlessly into Guardiola’s system.

Still just 24, the real question is how far can he go?

MF: Emile Smith Rowe

The English youngster described the North London derby as the best day of his life, and it may well have been his best performance in an Arsenal shirt.

Of course, he was helped by the acres of space that Tottenham left in the midfield, but his goal was well taken, and he proved a constant threat down the left-hand side for the Gunners.

Still just 21-years-old, he is a player that Arsenal need to build upon, not replace, as they look to turn a corner under Mikel Arteta. While they are still a long way off, performances like that will do them the world of good.

FWD: Jamie Vardy

Scoring three goals in a 2-2 draw meant that Jamie Vardy had to be included in this side. An unfortunate own goal was redeemed in style by a brace that rescued a point for his side, and proved that in Vardy’s case, age is just a number.

With the addition of Patson Daka, Vardy could find himself playing less and less this season in a bid to keep him fresh. When he does play, however, he normally delivers.

FWD: Michail Antonio

If one man embodies West Ham’s success in the last 12 months, it is Michail Antonio. An unorthodox striker finding success, his goalscoring has been a revelation spearheading David Moyes’ attack.

His last-minute goal against Leeds was the cherry on the cake of what was a very good performance, which saw him heavily involved upon his return from suspension.

Having already won Player of the Month for August, it is now his job to kick on to ensure another successful season for the Hammers.

FWD: Raul Jimenez

For the football purist, how good was it to see Raul Jimenez back among the goals after so long out. The nasty head injury he suffered against Arsenal last season ended his campaign, and he was yet to find the back of the net since his return.

However his goal, which proved to be the winner, was very well taken by the Mexican. Wolves will be praying that he can use it as a springboard from which to kick on, as they desperately need his presence and goals to spearhead their attack.
