Ben White joins Arsenal

More than a few eyebrows were raised when Arsenal announced that they had reached a 50 million pound agreement with Brighton for the transfer of Ben White from the South Coast to North London.

The England defender was part of the Euro 2020 squad that reached the final before losing to Italy, but did not play a competitive minute at the tournament, like fellow Arsenal new boy Aaron Ramsdale.

And he also endured a tricky start to his career in red and white, where Brentford forward Ivan Toney consistently got the better of him before a positive Covid-19 test result saw him miss the Gunners clashes with Manchester City and Chelsea.

However, in the three games since his return, White has shone. Successful shut outs against Norwich and Burnley were followed by an impressive performance against Tottenham, which saw Harry Kane kept quiet for much of the ninety minutes.

White in line for England recall

White’s recovery saw him miss Gareth Southgate’s first England squad of the season, but as per Jacob Steinburg of The Guardian, he will not be so unlucky this time around.

The Arsenal man is set to be called up for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary due to the absence of both John Stones and Harry Maguire, Southgate’s normal first-choice pairing.

Stones is yet to play for Manchester City this season, while Harry Maguire was ruled out for a few weeks with a calf injury after limping out of Manchester United’s clash against Aston Villa on Saturday.

This will offer White a chance to throw his hat in the ring to become a keystone of Southgate’s side even when the pair are fully fit, while a pair of impressive performances will move him closer to selection for the World Cup squad in 12 months time.
