Ahead of Chelsea clash, Leonardo Bonucci tells Premier League defenders how to combat Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku Chelsea’s newest weapon

Chelsea brought Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan last summer. The forward, who set the Blues back 97 million pounds, has already hit the ground running, netting four times in seven games across all competitions for his new club.

With the Belgian now at the spearhead of Chelsea’s frontline, the Blues are among the favourites for the Premier League and the Champions League honours this campaign, having picked up the European title last season.

Bonucci reveals how to stop the Chelsea man

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Juventus in the Champions League this evening, centre half Leonardo Bonucci lifted the lid on how to stop the Belgian from finding the net while speaking to The Athletic.

In six appearances against Juve, Lukaku managed just a solitary goal, coming from the penalty spot, so Bonucci has some authority on the matter.

Speaking on defending, he revealed:

“He can win games on his own. When you come up against him you have to be switched on for 100 minutes a game. Unfortunately for us defenders, we can’t disengage our brains even for 10 seconds because those 10 seconds might be lethal.”

“You must never engage Lukaku in a physical battle or play touch-tight. Instead, be ready to drop off because when his team has the ball, he will try to run in behind.

“In the box, he’s great at playing man-to-man so you need to be on the front foot, try to read the game and play hard. If you let him take up a position and he gets ahead of you, you won’t be able to step out and anticipate what’s coming.”

Will Premier League defenders heed Bonucci’s advice, or will they be forced to learn the hard way this season?
