Lionel Messi beats Man United stars and more to Champions League prize

Lionel Messi has seen his midweek efforts with Paris Saint-Germain rewarded by UEFA on Thursday evening.

City downed

Messi was of course back in action alongside the rest of Mauricio Pochettino’s star-studded PSG squad this past Tuesday.

The French heavyweights turned their attentions back towards matters on the continent, welcoming Manchester City to the Parc des Princes for the most highly-anticipated fixture of the Champions League gameweek.

The hosts headed into proceedings in full knowledge that a positive result was required, after slipping to a disappointing 1-1 stalemate with Club Brugge in their group stage opener two weeks ago.

And, when all was said and done in Paris, get their European campaign firmly up and running is precisely what PSG managed.

Poch and co. did enough to ultimately emerge on the right side of a 2-0 scoreline, courtesy of an opener from Idrissa Gueye, and a Lionel Messi stunner:

Leo’s latest prize

Messi’s 2nd, forthcoming fifteen minutes from time, of course proved hugely significant from an individual perspective, in the form of his first at club level since departing Barcelona during the summer.

And, not only that, but it has since also seen the 6-time Ballon d’Or winner aptly rewarded by UEFA.

As announced across social media, Messi’s maiden PSG strike has been voted as the Champions League’s ‘Goal of the Week’, courtesy of fans across the globe:
