How Emile Smith Rowe made the day of a young Arsenal fan after Brighton

Emile Smith Rowe makes the rain worth it for young Arsenal fan

The long journey from London and its surrounding area to the south coast of England can be a frustrating one. If you’re an Arsenal fan, that frustration was compounded by the downpour at the Amex Community Stadium tonight, when the Gunners clashed with high-flying Brighton.

But for one young fan, the ~2-hour car ride in each direction (or ~1-hour train ride each way) was all worth it at the end of the night, when homegrown favorite Emile Smith Rowe gave away his shirt to the youngster after the full-time whistle.

The sign that got the Hale End product’s attention? “Emile, I’m soaked. Can I have your shirt?” Appropriate, considering the “cold, wet, windy night at Stoke” vibes that transpired as Arsenal labored to a fortunate point after being soundly outplayed from start to finish by Graham Potter’s Seagulls.

And it is a gesture that will hardly go unnoticed given the atmosphere around Arsenal this season, as the squad under Mikel Arteta gets younger by the year, and chalked full of players who value the connection to the fanbase.

Hale End graduate enjoying life

No one understands that connection to the fans better than Emile Smith Rowe. Arsenal through and through, the Croydon-native has been at the club since the age of ten, when he joined the youth ranks at Hale End.

Still just 21, Smith Rowe’s connection to the club spurned him on when his chance at making a breakthrough into the first-team came after a very effective loan spell at Huddersfield Town during the second-half of the 2019-20 season.

Now viewed as a key piece of the attacking puzzle for Arteta, it comes as no surprise that Smith Rowe would value the traveling Arsenal support, especially on a night like tonight.
