Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has provided an explanation for his decision not to make use of the talents of either Kai Havertz or Hakim Ziyech versus Southampton.
Chilwell amongst the goals
Tuchel and co. turned their attentions back towards matters on the domestic front earlier this afternoon.
After slipping to a 1-0 defeat at Juventus in the Champions League during the week, the Blues welcomed the aforementioned Southampton to Stamford Bridge, desperate to avoid a 3rd successive loss across all competitions.
And, though, they looked far from their best throughout much of the 90 minutes, Chelsea, in the end, got the job done.
After James Ward-Prowse cancelled out Trevoh Chalobah’s first-half opener, Timo Werner’s rare finish restored the hosts’ lead five minutes from time, before Ben Chilwell added some gloss to the scoreline just shy of time added on.

Tuchel’s Pensioners, in turn, have moved clear at the Premier League’s summit, ahead of tomorrow’s showdown between Liverpool and Manchester City.
‘Have to pay attention…’
Amid an otherwise positive afternoon’s work for Chelsea, however, a couple of the club’s stars were no doubt left feeling altogether disappointed.
The players in question? Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech.
Despite his side having been chasing a much-needed winner late on, Thomas Tuchel opted against introducing either of his gifted attackers from the bench, instead, surprisingly, sending on the seldom-seen Ross Barkley.
In turn, speaking during his post-match press conference this evening, the Blues boss was inevitably drawn on his decision to leave both Havertz and Ziyech out.
And Tuchel was not shy in providing an explanation, admitting that a lack of ‘form’ ultimately proved decisive in the pair remaining glued to the bench:
Asked Thomas Tuchel about why Havertz/Ziyech were overlooked today: “Nobody is angry at them and nobody has major concerns but we have to pay attention to their form.”
