Why struggling Derby still owe Arsenal £8 million

Derby County goes into administration

The perils of spending well above your means and the inability to gain access to a Premier League windfall thanks to promotion has hit Derby County hard, as the Rams have recently gone into administration but have been assured by current manager Wayne Rooney that he will remain at the club despite the current situation.

As a result, any future owner(s) that maintain an interest in buying the club moving forward will be weighed-down with settling the clubs financial liabilities, which are – according to Joe.co.uk – supposedly in the ‘tens of millions of pounds.’

Additionally, the Pride Park outfit have also paid – in full – the wages of the clubs staff despite the financial hardships, but former boss Phillip Cocu is not set to receive a full compensation package.

Despite the layered issues that come with the current situation, administrators are said to be confident that a buyer will eventually come forward according to the Telegraph’s John Percy.

Arsenal still owed financial compensation for Krystian Bielik

If matters at Derby were not frustrating enough, the club is still said to have outstanding payments that must be made regarding previous transfer deals.

Polish giants Lech Poznan are still owed roughly £4million when the Derby bought Polish international winger Kamil Jóźwiak in September of last year.

On top that, Wayne Rooney’s outfit are confirmed to be behind in payments to Premier League side Arsenal for the purchase of Krystian Bielik in 2019, with an outstanding balance on £8million.

In hindsight, it was a deal that was hardly worth the financial outlay. Bielik arrived at Derby after failing to make a single appearance for Arsenal after spending four years at the club, which included loan spells at Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic.

The Polish international has yet to make an appearance this season as he still recovers from a knee ligament injury, and has featured just thirty-three times for Derby in the two years prior.

Having failed to climb back into the Premier League after their abysmal 2007-08 campaign, it is hard to tell how the situation cna rapidly improve for the storied football club.
