Manchester United vs Liverpool rivalry leads to outrageous chant

The rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool is one that has stretched back for generations, and continues to throw up some of the biggest games in the football calender, especially with the resurgence that the Merseyside club have made under Jurgen Klopp.

One of the more outrageous parts of the rivalry have been the chants aimed at each respective set of fans, including one in particular that the Manchester United faithful set around their cult her0 Ji Sung Park.

The South Korean midfielder made 204 red Devil appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson, and was always renowned for his ability to take on tactical information, making him the man Ferguson would turn to in bigger matches.

As such, he developed a great bond with the Manchester faithful, but they in turn used him to have a dig at their Merseyside rivals, coming up with the chant:

“Park, Park, wherever you may be

You eat dog in your own country

It could be worse, you could be Scouse

Eating rats in your council house”

Park Ji Sung speaks out on the song

Speaking to the official Manchester United channel about the song however, Park pleaded for the Manchester United fans to stop singing it due to its racial overtones, saying:

“I know that United fans don’t mean any offence to him for that song, but still I have to educate the fans to stop that word [dog meat], which is usually these days a racial insult to the Korean people.”

“Listening to the chant even 10 years later now, I feel sorry for the younger me who tried to overcome this discomfort that I felt back then.

“I also feel responsible for the young people who are still discriminated against as Asians or Koreans, and struggling with that kind of discomfort.”

He continued by pointing out the changes that had happened since the chant, claiming:

“In Korea, things have changed a lot. It is true that historically we have eaten dog meat but these days, particularly the younger generation, they really dislike it. The culture has changed.”

“I really request the fans to stop singing that word. It causes discomfort to Korean people when they hear that song. It’s time to stop.”

Manchester United added that they “fully support Ji-sung’s comments and urges fans to respect his wishes.”
