Ben Chilwell struggles for minutes
Ben Chilwell has become something of a fringe star of late. The left-back was first not used at Euro 2020 by Gareth Southgate.
And, despite ending 2020/21 as Thomas Tuchel’s main left-wing-back, would see Marcos Alonso take his spot throughout the start of the new campaign.
Chilwell, despite not being injured, was forced to sit on the bench for Chelsea’s first six Premier League games of the season.
However, the 24-year-old is slowly beginning to regain a regular spot under Tuchel. Chilwell featured for 45 minutes vs Juventus in the Champions League, as well as completing 90 minutes vs Aston Villa in the League Cup.
Chelsea defender Chilwell’s hope for current season
And now, this past weekend, Chilwell was handed his first start and appearance of the PL campaign – playing the full 90 minutes as the Londoners beat Southampton 3-1 with Chilwell scoring a key goal.

On the back of that goal, Chilwell has outlined his hope for the 2021/22 season.
The defender was a fairly prolific contributor of goals and assists last term and, after getting off the mark vs Southampton, Chilwell has now expressed his hope that he can improve upon his goal contribution numbers this season:
“It is definitely up there with my best goals. It was kind of instinctive, it just came to the back post. The keeper was either on the floor or near the other post, so I thought if I hit the target I had a good chance.
“The manager was happy I was getting in the positions to score. I had a couple of chances in the first half, second one could have done better, first one was a good save.
“If you look at my stats last year, four goals, seven assists, I did pretty well in that aspect, but you can always improve. I am never satisfied with what I’ve done, and hopefully my numbers will be better than last season and I can keep improving in an attacking sense.”
