The stat which places Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku ahead of Lionel Messi & more top stars

An insight into the quality of finishing produced by Romelu Lukaku with his weak foot has been provided recently.

Lukaku’s Chelsea stint

Romelu Lukaku would of course return to Chelsea over the summer following two super seasons with Inter Milan, the last of which saw him clinch the Serie A title.

The Belgian returned to the Premier League with a point to prove following his poor end to his Manchester United stint.

And, so far, Lukaku is certainly showcasing he is much improved from his last period in England.

The Belgian, despite Chelsea having a torrid run of fixtures that has already seen them face Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Juventus, has already scored three in six in the Premier League and one in two in the Champions League.

And, with Chelsea’s run of games set to be much easier following the international break, it is likely we will see the 28-year-old improve upon his already decent goal tally for the Blues.

Lukaku bests Messi & Haaland

Even before his switch to Chelsea, though, Lukaku has always been an excellent finisher.

At Everton, he netted 87 in 166, at West Brom 17 in 38, at Inter Milan 64 in 95 and, at Manchester United – despite the Belgian’s stint at Old Trafford largely seen as something of a failure – he would still score 42 in 96.

Now, a potential insight into why Lukaku has been such a deadly finisher throughout his career has been provided.

Football.london, citing statisticians Who Scored, have looked at fifteen men who have collectively logged almost 3,500 goals, with over 3,000 of those goals coming from their feet, to assess their weak foots.

And for the most part, those whose strong foot is their left generally score quite low when it comes to the percent of goals they have netted with their weaker foot.

It is explained that five of the fifteen players looked at were left-footed. Of those 15 players, four of the bottom five were left-footed players, when ranked by percent of goals scored with their weaker foot.

Gareth Bale scored just 12.1 per cent with his right, Lionel Messi 14.3 per cent and Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland 14.7 per cent.

Lukaku, on the other hand, has scored almost 31 per cent of his goals with his weaker foot.
