Gresini Motogp rider Alex Marquez stopped his practice session at the Spanish Grand Prix and brushed off a fast crash that led the way with the new Jerez Lap record.
Alex Marquez crashed with FP1 in Spain this morning, but the negative impact from that didn’t last, allowing him to surpass the session with the GP24 Ducati run by Gresini.
During the opening phase of an hour of practice, Alex Marquez passed turn 5 and bumped into him while chasing Mark Marquez on a fast lap.
His bike pops air fences and needed a red flag to repair the barriers, but there was doubt that Alex Marquez would be rejoining the session.
Alex Marquez came back in the final 15 minutes of practice and created a new lap record of 1M35.991 to lead Pecco Bagnaia 0.103 seconds.
The afternoon session at Geres proved to be a crashfest with Honda’s Joan Mir, Pramac’s Jack Miller, trackhouse duo Raul Fernandez, Ai Ogra, Yamaha’s Fabio Quartaralo and KTM’s blood binder all falling.
Of that group, Quartarraro and Mir were able to directly make it the Q2 location.
At the time of the red flag, Mark Marquez led the way to the factory Ducati with the 1M37.204S, improving when the session rebooted to 1M37.157.
Quartarraro, Johann Zarco of LCR Honda, Pedro Acosta of KTM, Franco Morbidelli of VR46, Bagnaia, and others all led the sessions.
However, with just under three minutes left, Alex Marquez returned to the top of the ranking with 1M35.991, allowing him to watch the afternoon the first.
Bagnaia was second ahead of Morbidelli, but Mark Marquez’s final flight lap ended with a disaster in six turns, reaching fourth.
Quartarraro was on the lap set to put him on the top of the mountain when he crashed at turn 13 in just under 15 minutes.
He was able to return to Pitrane on his favorite motorcycle, and he jumped fifth over numerous yellow flags, bagging the Q2 Sport at 1m36.419.
Fermin Aldeguer was sixth in his sister Gresini Ducati, while Zarco was the seventh major Honda of Acosta, Di Giannantonio and Mir.
The binder missed the Q2 spot in just 0.055 seconds at the factory KTM on the 11th, but Marco Betzecchi was the main Aprilia on the 12th.
Miller was placed 13th after the crash and was stuck in the first quarter location after both trackhouse riders fell.
Alix Espargaro was 21st in Honda at the end of the wildcard opening day.
