MotoGP will undergo a technical reset for 2027, with the top class switching engines from 1000cc to 850cc, banning ride height adjustment devices, reducing aero, and replacing Michelin tires with Pirelli tires.
However, with most of the grid currently having their contracts ending after 2026, there is a possibility that there will be a significant change in ridership.
Currently, only three riders have been announced to have a seat on the 2027 MotoGP grid.
Two of them are with Honda, with Johann Zarco confirmed to join LCR and future teammate Diogo Moreira stepping up to the premier class on a “multi-year deal” starting in 2026.
Another confirmed rider is Toprak Razgatlioglu, who will make his MotoGP debut with Pramac Yamaha next season.
After spending the season with the V4 M1, the Turkish star is hoping to put his knowledge of Pirelli tires to use in 2027, when WorldSBK title rival Nicolo Brega could be on the grid.
Brega will begin a Ducati MotoGP testing contract alongside his Superbike duties in 2026, with a potential move to the premier class the following year.
Meanwhile, Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer will be confident that his 2027 ‘option’ will be adopted by Ducati after his race-winning heroics at Mandalica.
Technically speaking, however, none of the five factory teams have yet signed a rider, with reigning champion Marc Marquez’s current factory contract running until the end of next season.
Many questions remain unanswered: Will the 32-year-old Marquez be instrumental in leading Ducati into a new era? Does teammate Francesco Bagnaia’s 2025 woes mean he is open to negotiations with rival manufacturers?
Similarly, will it be a ‘stay or go’ situation for fellow MotoGP champions Jorge Martin (Aprilia), Joan Mir (Honda) and Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha)?
Martin is already seeking an unsuccessful exit from Aprilia for Honda, but the RS-GP is currently the second best bike after Ducati.
Mill and Honda are finally gaining momentum as well, but Quartararo hinted that Yamaha’s future depends solely on the competitiveness of its 2026 bike, which is expected to be a new V4.
So far, only KTM has shown a glimpse of its new 850cc engine, with the manufacturer agreeing not to conduct track testing of the new machine until the end of the 2025 season.
The Austrian factory’s priority is to retain Pedro Acosta, but the young Spanish star has already been linked with Ducati and Honda.
