Manchester United reportedly has an obvious alternative that allows them to move if they fail to win the race due to the signature of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesco.
The Red Devils were really able to do this summer by signing to the top of the centre forward after the unconvincing form of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee last season.
Sesko appears to be emerging as the first choice in that position, but it’s not necessarily an easy deal.
As Newcastle is also pursuing Sesko, as reported by Athletics and others, Man UTD may need to resort to Plan B options instead.
Ollie Watkins Transfer Options Looks Realistic for Manchester United
If they can’t sign Sesco, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins appears ready to move to Old Trafford.
This adds that England International can be used for around £400,000-£500,000, according to a report from Sun.
According to the report, Watkins is keen to leave the villa and if the money is right, they don’t seem to get in his way.
Sesco may be a bigger outlook, but Watkins has proven in the Premier League and makes sense as a good short-term option to give Reuben Amorim a year or two before he has to consider signing the striker again.
Does Man Utd need to sign Sesko or Watkins?
Sesco will certainly be a better long-term investment for United, but of course there is no way to make sure he will succeed in the Premier League either.
Slovenia International is only 22 years old and not so prolific in the Bundesliga, so he may feel British football as a big step.
| Player League statistics 2024/25 | game | the goal |
| Ollie Watkins | 38 | 16 |
| Benjamin Sesco | 33 | 13 |
However, Watkins is probably no longer at his peak, so he could risk paying him up to £50 million at this stage of his career.
