Under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s leadership, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) held the Axar Patel-led Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2025 Indian Premier League match on Saturday, April 5th.

The Chennai Super Kings lost their 17th IPL 2025 match against the Delhi Capitals with 25 runs at Mashidanbaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai.

CSK was first invited to the bowl in the match, and they couldn’t do a good job, and DC rode KL Rahul’s stunning 77 runknocks to allow them to post a very total of 183/6. For the host, Karel Ahmed picked up two wickets, while Rabindra Jadeha, Noor Ahmad and Mashesha Patirana each bagged one wicket.

Chasing the target, CSK’s top-order batter failed again, and the only fighting knock came when he scored 69 runs from the bats of Vijay Shankar. Ms Dhoni remained undefeated at 30*, but CSK finished 158/5 in 20 overs.

After the match, CSK skipper Ruthurajgaikwad said they were trying to improve but things weren’t moving forward. He said:

“It hasn’t gone our path since the last few games, we are trying to improve.

Ruturaj Gaikwad further stated that the decline in power play performance is of great concern to them. He said:

“(Power Play) That’s a big concern even in the bowling department. We add 15-20 runs and lose too many wickets. We’re trying, but that’s not happening.”

Ruturaj Gaikwad also said they were a bit concerned and that they should be positive if they want to go back to winning ways. He further demanded that Ms Dhoni and his other teammates come together to make things happen. He said:

“I think (due to the misery of the team) that people bowling on power plays are a bit offended or tentatively tentative.

While talking about the lack of intention, Ruturaj Gaikwad said he has been playing catch-up games since power play. He said:

“Since power play (about the lack of intentions today), we’ve been constantly catching up and playing the game. We were way behind, and there was only one batter left. DC bowled really well and used the conditions really well.

How did CSK work in previous IPL matches with DC?

The Chennai Super Kings were unable to perform well against the Delhi Capitals in their previous matches, only registering 171/6 in 20 overs while chasing 192, facing 20 losses.

First bowling, Chennai Super Kings struggled with the Delhi Capitals batting unit as they took Prith Vichaux, David Warner and Rishabh Pants to the cleaner.

Matheesha Pathirana appeared as the top bowler for CSK in the innings, earning a 3-wicket distance, while Mustafizur Rahman and Ravindra Jadeja also got one wicket each.

Following the target, CSK got off to a tough start. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra were both fired within three overs.

Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell patiently rebuild the innings in the 68-run stands. But things got tough for CSK after they got out, requiring 79 runs from the final five overs.

The legendary wicketkeeper batsman Dhoni ultimately showed off some great hits, finishing unbeaten with 37 off 16. However, it wasn’t enough for the victory as CSK was reduced to 171/6.
