Catcher Will Smith and former ace Walker Buhler have made large donations to people affected by wildfires in World Series baseball history, according to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.

Buehler became famous for finishing off the fall classic Game 5, gathering the first saves of his career while throwing the final pitch of the 2024 season. Catching the celebrity pitch, Smith worked with his wife Carla and Buhler to find a way to bring even more meaning to the ball after the wildfires destroyed the city they helped bring the championship a few months ago.

“I was just talking to my wife, Walker, and trying to figure out what to do,” Smith said. “Then the fire started, and that was a bit simple, and that was something we wanted to do.

On behalf of Smith and Buehler charities, the final number after auction was $414,000. This will be donated to rescue efforts across Los Angeles.

It is definitely a major part of baseball history as this ball helps so many people in the community that have experienced such devastating losses in recent months. Smith spoke about how impressed he was with the amount of money baseball made at the auction.

“Yeah, I was (impressed),” he said. “There were reviews on the entire map. It’s really hard to tell.”

The Smith and the are off to another hot start in 2025. Fans are hoping that the Backstop will catch another baseball this October for the World Series finals.
