Last night, many social media fans expressed distrust that Marco Asensio was allowed to play for Aston Villa, a loan club, which will face his parent’s side, Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG passed the villa in the Champions League quarter-finals, but UEFA rules meant there was a slight risk that one of his players could have knocked them out of the tournament.
Asensio left PSG in January for a loan transfer to the villa, but there were no rules preventing him from playing against his employer in the European club competition.
Marcus Rashford, who is still available for rent at the Villa, will not be able to play parent club Manchester United in the Premier League, but there is no such rule at the Champions League level.
Fans were surprised to see Marco Asensio playing against PSG at Aston Villa
One fan posted about Asensio’s situation and said, “Does the rules of UEFA work differently? Can Asensio play in a villa when he’s already played for PSG in this competition?
Another said: “Asensio is playing against PSG while Lone Villa sends me out.”
The third is, “What is this rule that you can play against your parent club? Don’t think I like it.”
Still, we’ve seen this as Philip Coutinho previously scored for Bayern Munich for Bayern Munich while being loaned out at the Allianz Arena by the Catalan giants.
Thibaut Courtois also knocked out Chalsea from the Champions League when loaned out at Atletico Madrid and played both feet in the 2014 semi-finals.
Asensio couldn’t swing things around here in the favor of the villa, but he had previously had a decent loan spell at the villa park. And I imagine Midland’s outfit would try to protect him forever.
