Growing up, the best players will often hit the leadoff to maximize the amount of trips to the plate he/she has. There is always one player who stood out from the others.
Now, even on the largest scale, Dave Roberts operates like the shoe hei ohtani.
Japanese slugger hitters were able to hit very easily in the second, third or cleanup spot of all teams in the league. Otani doesn’t “fit” the typical type of leadoff hitter, but there’s nothing typical about the best players in baseball.
In the wake of the ‘ struggles with scoring runs (before the series with the Rockies), Roberts was asked whether he would move Otani from the leadoff spot and potentially between Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman. He said:
“I think we will go back to the same position of being a continuous left-handed person, and I also feel that there are people who perform better than me.
A staggering batsman based on being left-handed or right-handed makes sense from a strategy standpoint. If the lineup has consecutive left-handed or right-wing groups in batting order, it makes it easier for the opposing team to stack the bullpen accordingly.
In this case, Otani’s ability to ride the bass is usually cashed out considering how both Betts and Freeman are batters.
Look for Ohtani to continue operating from the top spot in order. It makes sense to take him to the plate as much as possible.
