Kayla Harrison Reveals Sparring Amanda Nunes Was the Wake-Up Call That Forced Her Move: "Oh [expletive], I Gotta Move Here"

During a sparring session with Amanda Nunes, Kayla Harrison realized she had to switch gyms.

After winning several world titles under the PFL banner, Harrison rose to the bantamweight rankings within the Octagon, winning Holly Holm and Ketren Vieira. Currently, the two-time Olympian will be adding UFC gold to her collection when she challenges the 135-pound Queen Julianna Pena at UFC 316 on Saturday, June 7th.

Harrison’s skills on earth cannot be denied, but her blows are the weakest part of her game and could pose problems for her against someone as crude as “Venezuelan Vixen.”

However, Harrison has taken important steps to improve boxing. In 2018, she moved to Florida and trained for the American Top Team, which was previously home to former two-division UFC champion Amanda Nunes.

In fact, it was a single sparring session with “Lionus,” which prompted Harrison to set up a camp at ATT in the hopes of closing out her skill set.

“I think I did Mako on Monday, and the next day I sparred Amanda. ‘Yeah (expletive) I have to move here.’ So, a month later, I packed my own and moved from Boston to Florida,” Harrison told Mike Bourne.

Kayla Harrison is on a collision course with “The Liones.”

Harrison, who defeated Juliana Pena this summer, sets the stage for the much-anticipated clash with Nunes.

“Lionars” left the sport in 2023 after a dominant victory over Irene Ardana at UFC 289. While the showdown with Harrison could change everything, she sounds like she’s settled in a trilogy battle with Pena.
