Liverpool confirmed themselves as the Premier League champion on Sunday. Congratulations have been poured for the 20-time English champions from men who have been their regular nemesis over the past decade.

Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool was the runner-up at Pep Guardiola’s Man City, but they managed to get the best of them this season. This is an achievement that has not been noticed by former managers of Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

At a post-match press conference after Man City won Nottingham Forest 2-0 in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley (via mirror), Guardiola issued a congratulatory message to Liverpool, as well as his hope that his side could challenge the title next season.

“Before I start, I would like to congratulate myself and all the clubs on behalf of Liverpool and the Premier League on behalf of myself and all the clubs, which is no surprise.

“They’re a great team. They’ll hold the title for a year, and I hope they’ll compete until next season, but this season was impossible.

It was certainly a tough season for Man City with a victory over Crystal Palace in next month’s FA Cup final, but it will restore the pride on Guardiola and his side. There is little doubt they will fight back at the top of the table in the coming years, especially as major changes are expected to be made to their team during the next summer transfer period.

But for now, they’re focused on finishing in the top five of the Premier League as well.
