Sir Alex Ferguson always looked at home-made talent and built the Manchester United dynasty behind British and Irish stars like Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Roy Keene.
The legendary Scottish manager is famous for not always looking into the eyes, even his biggest stars, and was not afraid to punish some of the game’s biggest names.
Gary Neville recalls the conflict after swearing at 83 while together at United.
“I did it again in his office. Then he left me out for the next two weeks and put me on the bench. He yelled something at me (in the game) I knew it.
Perhaps the most famous case of “Fergie,” who takes on one of his own players, came in 2005, leading to Keene’s departure as captain of the Red Devils.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder has been in and out of the team since Liverpool’s Louis Garcia tackle was poor and injured, and has also had issues with the quality of the team’s accommodation during pre-season camp in Portugal.
And Keene left Old Trafford in November 2005 with mutual consent after the explosion criticized his teammates on MUTV and several lines with Ferguson and assistant manager Carlos Keiroz.
Ferguson: Gerrard was the best midfielder in the Premier League
Suddenly, United have opened a big hole in a team that has dominated the Premier League for years, and Ir Alex reveals the only man who can meet the then void being Liverpool’s captain Stephen Gerrard.
“If you were looking for a player to replace Keene, it would definitely be Gerrard. He has become the most influential player in the UK.
“I’ve seen him quite a bit. Gerrard is Keene. He seems to be there, just like the ball is everywhere. He has an incredible engine, desire, determination. Everyone wants to have Gerrard on his team.”
It’s a bit surprising that Scott also appreciated Gerrard’s talent. When United ruled their northwestern counterparts within the country, Gerrard was the only constant on their side.
