Veteran team India opener Rohit Sharma revealed his father’s reaction to his retirement from Test cricket ahead of his upcoming tour of England. The 38-year-old cricketer said his father, Grunas Sharma, was disappointed with the decision to retire, adding that he doesn’t like “new era” cricket.

Rohit surprised many by announcing his retirement from Test cricket just before the five-match Test series in England, which begins on June 20th. He recently made this decision in May 2025.

In the launch of Puja Puhala’s book, Rohit Sharma, the diary of the wife of a cricketer in Mumbai, said his father, who worked for a transport company, had made many sacrifices to support his family. Rohit also revealed that his father is a test cricket fan and does not like this new era of cricket.

“My dad worked for a transport company. Like I said, what my mother did, my dad was very involved in sacrificeing things so we could take our lives. But my dad has always been a test cricket fan from day one. He doesn’t like cricket at this new age.”

Sharma struggled with his form during the series with New Zealand and Australia. It is worth mentioning that he dropped out of Sydney’s final test. However, Rohit said he has no plans to quit before the fifth test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).

That day I got 264 in ODI… – Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma said his father was barely excited after a record inning of 264 runs against Sri Lanka in 2014 after his father still existed as the highest individual ODI score. He recalls his father simply responding with a gentle “well played” without being too excited.

“I still remember that day getting a 264 in ODI. He seemed fine, well played. Well done. There was no excitement from him. It’s important to go out there.

He was a bit disappointed when I announced my retirement – Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma said he was disappointed when his father announced his retirement from Test cricket. However, his father was proud of Rohit’s achievements.

“My dad saw me playing a lot of cricket with the red ball. Obviously he’s very grateful for red ball cricket. And obviously, when he announced my retirement, he was a bit disappointed, but he was happy at the same time.

Rohit averaged 40.57, including the 12th century, and scored 4,301 runs in 67 games. He led India in 24 Tests, earning 12 wins, but also suffering nine losses. However, his tenure ended with bass notes as India lost consecutive Test series to New Zealand (0-3) and Australia (1-3).
