As Australian wicket keeper Alex Carrey moved in to collect the ball, Beddingham casually reached for the pad, pulled it out and dropped it on the ground. Confusion broke out as Usman Khawaja immediately pleaded for “treatment of the ball” and everyone was shocked, including the commentator and the Lord’s judge.

Judge Richard Illingworth quickly walked to his colleague Chris Gaffannie as Steve Smith, Alex Carrey and others were waiting for the decision. After a brief discussion, Richard Illingworth signaled “Not Out” to end the short but intense suspense.
Even former Australian cricketer and commentator Matthew Hayden revealed the viewers’ situation through the comment box, saying that if he stays on the pad the ball is considered dead. Matthew Hayden was broadcast saying, “If you stay on the pad, the ball is considered dead.”

However, the incident sparked debate, and many questioned much by questioning whether David Beddingham should be given to handle a completely dead ball before the batter pulls it out of his pad. However, they went ahead and David Beddingham was allowed to continue his business.

What are the rules?
In particular, former England captain Michael Vaughn was given in similar circumstances during his tests against India long before the rules changed. Since 2017, such dismissals have been classified as “interfering with the field” in accordance with Act 37.3.1.
The rule states, “If a deliberate obstruction or distraction occurs by preventing the striker from being caught if the delivery is not no ball, the striker is out to sabotage the field.”
Another important law is 20.1.1.4. This states that if it gets stuck between the bat and the batter’s body or clothing, the ball will die. Law 20.1.1.4 states that “whether playing or not, you are trapped between the bat and the batter person, or between items of clothing or equipment.”
Now, David Beddingham is dangerous for Australia, given his red ball statistics in the UK. He averaged 57.21, including 1600, and recorded 4,463 runs in 58 games.
At the 2024 county championships, he finished as the second-highest rungeter with a 1331 run with a great run of 78.29. His sixth century saw the most number of players in the tournament.
