Lando Norris received a five-second penalty for colliding with Oscar Piastri at the 2025 F1 Canadian Grand Prix.

Norris failed to finish the race in Montreal, so the penalty did not affect the outcome of the final race.

The British driver hit the back of his teammate Piastri on 67 laps of Sunday’s race as the pair fought in fourth place.

Norris tried to go inside the piastry, but the Australians had already blocked it.

Norris drove behind his teammate and crashed into the wall on his left.

Norris’s title chance was a harmful blow as he failed to finish the race, but Piastri ended up in fourth place.

The championship standings gap is 22 points after 10 rounds in 2025.

The steward gave Norris a five-second penalty.

Norris completed more than 90% of the race distance, which made him classified as 18th in the final race results.

The good news for Norris is that it hasn’t been converted to a grid penalty.

Steward’s explanation

Norris received a time penalty but there were no penalty points on his license for contact with Piastri.

The FIA explained: “Car 4 was about to overtake car 81 on the main straight. He tried to move to the left of car 81, but there was no space. The driver of car 4 said he thought there was space but realized he had collided with car 81.

“The Steward determined that the driver of Car 4 was due to the collision. The collision had no immediate and obvious sport results, so he imposed a five-second post-race penalty on Car 4.”
