No. 7 Mirra Andreeva reached the 16th round in the majors in a straight set victory at Wimbledon on Saturday, with 11th seed Elena Rybakina being expelled by No. 23 Clara Towson 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the rainy third round match.
18-year-old Andreeva became the youngest woman to reach the youngest 16 in the first three majors of the season, and at the age of 17, the youngest woman to reach the first three majors of the season.
The best seed remaining in the lower half of the women’s draw in the first week marked with the Hughes set, Andreva has yet to drop a set comparable to her best run at the All England Club.
After failing to advance past the previous second round, Baptist, who made the third round in the back-to-back major, had been bidding to become the second unseeded American woman to reach the 16th round at Wimbledon in the past decade.
“To be honest, I was very focused today,” said Andreeva, coached by 1994 Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez. “I saw her first round and I knew it would be difficult because she created a lot of different things on the court and has a forehand rocket.
“Every time I play, I feel like I’m on an elevated level.”
Russian native Andreva is waiting for the winner of the Wimbledon champion Barbora Krezikova (No. 17) and Emmanavaro’s defending Wimbledon champion match.
2022 champion Rybakina has made her fifth Wimbledon appearance, reaching the second week with each of the previous four.
She was never defeated in straight sets at Wimbledon before Saturday.
Meanwhile, Towson joined Caroline Wozniacki (23) as the only Danish player to reach that stage multiple times during her opening days, reaching the second major in her career.
“I’ve never won a match with grass before the grass season began, so I’m extremely proud and pleased with the way I play today,” he said, not winning three main drow appearances at the All England Club before.
Towson scored 73% of the points in her first serve – “My serve is always a big weapon” – is the victory in the statement against Rivakina, who defeated Towson in two previous meetings.
Towson played No. 8 Iga Swiatek or unseeded American Daniel Collins in the quarter-final spot. The Danish woman never arrived at a Wimbledon quarters and is the only man who would do so in 2023.
Another fourth matchup was set up when Liudmila Samsonova and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro Advanced from 19 No. 19 are Advanced.
Bouzas Maneiro, who defeated 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova in the first round last year, was a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 winner at Dayana Yasutermska, who eliminated No. 2 Coco Gauff in the first round of the year.
Also moving forward on Saturday was the Belinda Vencik, who overcame Italy’s Elisabetta Cocchialetto 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7) in a three-hour match. In the 16th round of Bensik’s fourth round at Wimbledon, he unites Martina Hingis during most of the Swiss women’s opening days.
No. 18 Eleaterina Alexandrova defeated Zeynep Salmez 6-3, 7-6 (1).
