France’s Evian Le Baines – Leona Maguire made a hole-in-one on her way to 6-under 65 in the first round on Thursday, with a five-way share of the lead.

Maguire attacked a par 3 second hole – her 11th – at Evian Resort Golf Club after starting with the back nine in the fourth major of the year, then sunk a tee shot from 164 yards.

“It was just a bit off the 8 iron for me. It looked good in the air. You’re not sure about the hole until the ball actually lands,” she said. “It’s like a perfect morning for it. The wind isn’t that good, especially with that teebox.”

The Irish Woman has joined the 65 with American duo Andrea Lee and Jennifer Coupcho, Australians Grace Kim and Gabriella Raffels and former doubles tennis player Gabriella Raffels.

Minjee Lee, who won the women’s PGA Championship in her third major title last month, was alone in sixth place after having a 66 card.

Top ranked Nelly Corda stroked her behind her in a seventh tie. Korda is looking for his first victory of the season and a third major title.

Thailand’s No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul bid to win the majors for the first time, but was tied for 16th place after 68 in the group featuring Lottie Woad. The 21-year-old college student from England has entered the spotlight after delivering one of the most amazing wins by amateurs.

The world’s No. 1 amateur and last year’s Augusta National Women’s Amateur winner, Woad is at the forefront of securing a professional tour position.

English golfer Charlie Hull had to withdraw from the first round after falling to the ground twice due to the virus. Organizers said Hal had undergone a medical check but had no serious health issues.
