The Boston Celtics find themselves in a strange and unexpected reconstruction year. After Jason Tatum’s horrible Achilles injury, the Celtics are not competitive next season.
In his absence, Jalen Brown is tasked with leading the Celtics as the best player. Brown recently spoke about his frustration with the Celtics, so perhaps this new role would make him feel good.
The Celtics moved from Keystar this offseason. Most famous is the Christapsporzingis, which the Celtics traded for the Atlanta Hawks.
But they may have found a replacement for him as Charles Bassey moved the Celtics fanbase with his summer league play.
However, another name for the Las Vegas Celtics is Max Shulga, who is about to win a spot on the team.
Max Shulga, the 57th Ukrainian star in the 2025 NBA Draft, spoke about his time with the Boston Celtics in a recent interview.
When discussing the players he saw before coming to the NBA, Shurga named Donte Divinsenzo the archetype he wanted to fit in with the Celtics.
“I’ve seen a lot of Donte Divinsenzo, he shoots open threes and defends. He can play make and make his own shots. Created for his teammates, I’ve seen a lot of him.”
Unfortunately for Shurga, he couldn’t function well in the role. Shulga has so far scored just 18 points in total in three games he has played for the Celtics in the summer league.
Worse, Shurga’s three-point shooting is the aspect he admires a lot about Divinsenzo, making it 1-9 in three games, converting only 11.1% of his attempts from the Celtics’ deep.
Shurga is unlikely to get any minutes as the Celtics main team is responsible for summer league performances. So President Brad Stephens may need to look elsewhere.
The Celtics are planning to trade Anfernee Simons, which landed on Jrue Holiday Trade. Perhaps they could use his $27.7 million salary to get back a cheap impact player.
Whatever the player they land, don’t expect the Boston Celtics to become the championship team next season. With Jason Tatum coming out all season, the Celtics don’t have the tools to be competitors.
This may actually be a disguise blessing for the Celtics. Regardless of how their season progressed, their incredibly expensive roster is no longer acceptable.
With Tatum out and a few players gone, the Celtics can learn about the new players they have landed and give the system plenty of time to gel.
Once Tatum returns to the 2026-27 NBA season, the roster could be strong enough to compete again.
