Tommy Fleetwood’s disappointment confirmed he secured his position in the European Ryder Cup team after failing to win his first PGA Tour victory.

The English golfer took a one-shot lead in the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee on Sunday, but with a poor finish, he missed the playoffs by strokes and lost his chance to add a PGA Tour title to his victory around the world.

Justin Rose won the playoffs. Justin Rose has booked his position at Beth Page Black in New York for the September 26-28 showdown.

“It’s amazing to bring both of these guys back to the team. They bring a lot on and off the course. Let’s go!” European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald said, surpassing Fleetwood and Rose’s photos on Monday’s X.

Fleetwood, who is set to appear in Europe for four consecutive times, wrote to X:

The top six golfers in the European team’s point rankings on August 24th will qualify for the team. McIlroy, Rose and Fleetwood qualified with points, while Robert Macintyre, Tyrrell Hatton and Sepp Straka closed out their current top six.

Shane Lowry, Rasmus Højgaard, LudvigÅberg and Viktor Hovland concluded the top 10 and appear to be a good fit for being a captain’s pick if they don’t win one of the automatic berths. Liv Golf League captain Jon Rahm will form the team on the 22nd. This means that Matt Wallace, Matt Fitzpatrick, Thomas Detry and Aaron Rai may be fighting in one or two spots.

Mark Schlabach of Associated Press and ESPN contributed to this report.
