Derrick Rose created his own name as a member of the Chicago Bulls.
Since Michael Jordan retired in 1998, the Chicago Bulls have been looking for the next superstar who can bring their team to glory.
After years of failing, the Bulls appear to have hit the gold medal with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
Rose immediately influenced the Bulls as he led them into the postseason in his rookie year with the organization.
In his third year with the Bulls, D-Rose was named the league’s most valuable player. He is the youngest in NBA history. This is a record that has not yet been handed down.
Under Rose’s leadership, the Bulls dominated the Eastern Conference, but the athletic superstar’s career was quickly derailed by injuries.
By 2014, Rose was in his own shell, and the Bulls finally decided to trade him for the New York Knicks in 2016. Rose spent the rest of his career as a role player for various teams, and announced his retirement in 2024.
Following the announcement, Bulls CEO Michael Reindolff surprised his previous No. 1 overall pick in his jersey retirement.
“I’m telling you next year when I retire your number on the rafters. It’s going to be about you more than the fans,” Rainsdorf said in January 2025.
Almost immediately, Rose broke in tears, showing what the decision meant to him. At the time, no date was specified as to when Rose would receive the honor.
Well, the Bulls have now confirmed that the Rose jersey is scheduled to enter the rafters on January 24th, 2026.
For context, Rose wore #1 along with the Bulls. That’s the retirement jersey. However, Reinsdorf has specified one condition that allows someone to wear that retired jersey number.
“Unless PJ is a bull, no one wears that number one jersey. He wears that number one jersey, is it okay? Is that fair?” Rainsford said.
PJ is Rose’s son and will be 13 this year. Therefore, if he decides to take basketball as a career, PJ will have to wait at least six years or more to qualify for the draft.
This means that the earliest he can draft is the 2032 NBA draft as PJ’s birthday falls in October. Until then, D-Rose jerseys have hanging down rafters alongside Jordan and Scotty Pippen.
