The MotoGP machine will be running on Pirelli tires for the first time during a private test at Misano Tuesday.
The test, which takes place two days after the San Marino Grand Prix and immediately after the official Misano test, marks Pirelli’s “first step” as it prepares to succeed Michelin as MotoGP’s sole tire supplier in 2027.
The five manufacturers, Ducati, Aprilia, KTM, Yamaha and Honda, all exist along with factory test riders using the current 1000cc prototype, but will be banned after next season.
Giorgio Barbier, Pirelli’s motorcycle racing director, said:
“This test represents the first step in getting useful information in the development of Pirelli’s MotoGP tires. This is a test that you want to start working with a premier class team.
“When we can test it out in 2026 with a new bike, we already have a product that is in the advanced stages of development and very similar to the final one.”
Barbier has confirmed that manufacturers have access to several front and rear tire solutions using current MotoGP RIM sizes.
“The five manufacturers that are used in MotoGP will be available to test riders with 17-inch diameter rims, 4-inch front and 6.25-inch diameter at the rear,” he explained.
“As required by regulations, new Pirelli tires will need to be tested on bikes competing in the current season.
“In terms of characteristics and performance aspects of the new 850 configurations to be used in the new era of world championships that begin in 2027, testing will be performed with setup changes without a ride-height device.”
The manufacturer has agreed not to begin truck testing of 850cc machines until the end of the 2025 season. The next Pirelli test is expected to be in the middle of November right after the Valencia finale and the official MotoGP test.
Pirelli will continue to supply tires to the Moto2 and Moto3 World Championships in 2027, when Michelin takes over Pirelli’s role as the global superbike tire supplier in 2027.
