The Los Angeles are trying to figure out why rookie relief pitcher Loki Sasaki’s fastball velocity dropped 1.5 mph in Game 1 of the National League CS.

Monday night was tough for Sasaki, who endured the worst bullpen exit of his short career as a reliever. Entering the bottom of the 9th inning with a 2-run lead, Sasaki intended to continue pitching. But after allowing a double, two walks, and a sacrifice fly, the ball was given to Blake Treinen to close out the game.

Manager Dave Roberts talked about the rookie’s change in speed ahead of Game 2 on Tuesday.

“We’ve identified it. We don’t know the answer,” Roberts said. “We’ll see how today goes. But it’s one of the things we’re still in uncharted territory with him. We’re still gathering information. And he’s doing everything he can to be prepared, ready and productive.”

When asked Tuesday if Sasaki would be available, Roberts didn’t rule anything out, but didn’t seem to believe Sasaki would be used.

“I’m not saying he’s not available, but it’s unlikely we’ll use him,” Roberts said.

Sasaki was preparing for Monday’s unforgettable outing with the .

The young right-hander has yet to allow an earned run in his short relief career, and his last pitch was three perfect innings in Game 4 of the NLDS.

Loss of velocity doesn’t seem to be a concern for Roberts, but so far the team still doesn’t have an exact answer.
