Manchester United remain fully supportive of Manuel Ugarte despite the Uruguayan midfielder’s mixed performances since arriving at Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
Fabrizio Romano admitted that both Ruben Amorim and the club’s leadership continue to support the 24-year-old and are confident he will develop as the season progresses.
Ugarte joined United from Paris Saint-Germain in a big summer move in August 2024, but his transition to English football has so far been difficult.
Ugarte’s arrival was seen as a significant coup for Man United, with the midfielder considered one of Europe’s most promising ball-winners.
Manchester United expects Manuel Ugarte to improve
The move reunites him with Amorim, who he grew up with in Portugal, and hopes were high that he would immediately bring energy, bite and defensive discipline to United’s midfield.
However, adapting to the Premier League proved more difficult than expected.
Since the start of the season, Ugarte has started just two games in the Premier League, logging a total of 243 minutes.
His performance was variable, with moments where solid defensive work was offset by poor positioning and distribution.
Romano, writing for GiveMeSport, admitted that the club’s leadership has faith in Ugarte but hopes he improves quickly.
“Of course, the performances have not always been great, but the coach and the club maintain faith in Ugarte. They hope to improve soon.”
Red Devils have complete faith in midfielder
Despite the rocky start, Amorim and the club are continuing to persevere. Romano reported that the coaching staff still has full confidence in Ugarte and believes his best will emerge once he fully adapts to the pace and physicality of English football.
Amorim himself has yet to establish the midfield partnership he prefers, and Ugarte still has a chance to cement his place in the starting XI.
The Uruguayan’s strengths – his aggressive pressing, ball-winning ability and tireless work rate – remain highly valued as United seek a balance between control and defense in central areas.
But if you want to fend off competition, continuous improvement is essential.
United are confident that with time and consistent minutes, the former PSG man will evolve into the midfield anchor they envisioned when he signed his contract.
