Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of a surprise return for Everton midfielder and former Red Devils youngster James Garner.
The 24-year-old came through Manchester United’s academy and ultimately made the move after making just seven appearances for the first team.
Garner has since shown some development at Everton and it appears United have some interested in bringing him back to Old Trafford.
This comes as United in Focus reports, with transfer expert Graham Bailey saying United are exploring the possibility of Garner returning.
Manchester United considering surprise move to re-sign James Garner
This will come as a surprise to some United fans, but Garner also appears to be one of the midfield targets alongside the big names at the moment.
Sky Sports has linked MUFC with Carlos Baleva and Elliott Anderson, who will definitely be popular moves for in-form players with big futures in the game.
Garner, by contrast, is a bit of a surprise, but it seems like he’s at least somewhere on their list of options.
However, he is nearing the end of his contract with Everton, so that could be one reason why he continues to be considered as a cheaper option.
James Garner’s transfer situation explained
Bailey said: “United are aware of the situation with James Garner and are always keeping an eye on the academy graduate, who has been playing particularly well. I’ve heard reports within the recruitment department that he’s doing well.”
“He has had an excellent season at Everton under David Moyes, which has seen Garner attract the attention of a number of clubs, including United.”
“However, negotiations with Everton are progressing and it is highly unlikely that he will finish the campaign as a free agent.”
Garner still looks likely to sign a new contract with Everton, and it will be interesting to see how that affects United’s plans for the former England Under-21 international.
