At the 19th round of the Moto2 Championship, the Australian Grand Prix, Senna Agius coped well with the inclement weather to win on his home turf in the midst of a fierce title battle.

The Australian started second but felt he had the pace to do something special in front of his home crowd, taking the lead into turn one and staying put.

The Liqui Mori Dynavolt Intact GP rider dealt with an early challenge from Diogo Moreira and was soon involved in a battle with Manuel Gonzalez, taking his chances to build up the lead.

By the 9th lap, there was a difference of more than 1 second, and as the laps progressed, the distance between Agius and his rival only widened.

The No. 81 bike led the line by 3.684, and Agius had room to ease his five-second advantage to secure the victory. This is the first Moto2 home rider to do so at Phillip Island, and Agius’ second of the season following his win at Silverstone. Agius celebrated in true Australian style by showing off his Shoeie on the podium.

The chase group covered second to seventh, with rookie David Alonso starting sixth after a late push, but the Colombian was also tired of waving to the crowd on the lap back to parc fermé for Aspar.

Alonso moved up and held second place with four laps to go, moving into third place after the Italtrans rider started from pole position, passing Brazilian Diogo Moreira, who had held second place for most of the race.

Daniel Holgado moved up the order in the final stages of the race. The rookie started fifth, but dropped back to stay in the top ten on the opening lap. The Aspar rider took an impressive 4th place.

Jake Dixon also had a recovery ride after losing touch and falling back. Elf Mark VDS rider Elf Mark VDS was the only Bosco Scuro in contention for a podium spot and was back in fifth place at the checkered flag.

Barry Baltas caught fire on the last lap. The Belgian, who spent most of the race in 11th place, quickly broke away from the pack after receiving a second wind. His final overtake came on the final lap, when he made a determined move around the outside of his opponent Manuel Gonzalez, who was sixth.

These moves caused González to fall off the podium and fall back to seventh place on his second Dynavolt bike, but the Spaniard quickly headed to parc fermé to congratulate his teammate on winning the race.

Albert Arenas closed in on the pack on the final lap, but was unable to close the gap and Italjet Gresini finished 8th.

Aron Kane, riding the second Fantic bike, finished 9th, and although Ayumu Sasaki dropped slightly, RW Hydrofolia maintained a top-10 finish.
