Matthijs de Ligt’s nasty comments about Liverpool full-backsWhat went wrong with Liverpool’s full-backs?

Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt made a point of claiming that he and his team-mates felt Liverpool’s full-backs were the weak link in today’s match.

Speaking to Viaplay after Man United’s surprise 2-1 win at Anfield, De Ligt said there was some planning ahead of time to take advantage of the Liverpool full-back.

Arne Slott started at left-back after signing Milos Kerkes in the summer, but fellow new signing Jeremy Frimpong was not even in the starting XI as Conor Bradley played first.

Either way, this is certainly a huge step back from when Liverpool had Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson at their peak.

De Ligt said after the game that United knew the Liverpool full-back was a major weakness in the team, which is pretty damning considering he was initially seen as an exciting addition when he arrived in the summer.

“We knew that Liverpool had a weakness and that was the full-backs,” the Dutchman said after the match.

This is certainly a big problem for LFC, as their back line hasn’t been solid at all this season and the new full-backs are probably a big part of the problem.

Frimpong appeared to be the best choice to replace Alexander-Arnold at right-back, but quickly fell out of favor in the slot.

The Dutchman did not start today as Bradley qualified, but Dominik Szoboszlai has also played in the position several times this season.

Meanwhile, Kelkes has enjoyed a stellar spell at his former club Bournemouth, but feels it is difficult to make the step up and it may be time for Slott to bring Andrew Robertson back into the starting XI.
