Immediately after the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, Liverpool manager Arne Slott revealed fresh injury concerns ahead of a crucial season.
During the match at Anfield, midfielder Ryan Gravenbirch was sent off in the 61st minute with what Slott described as a twisted ankle, and his availability for the next European game is now in question.
The injury comes at a sensitive time for Liverpool, who are chasing a run of form to restore confidence in their ability to defend their title.
Grabenwerch failed to complete the match between Liverpool and Man United
Grabenberch’s withdrawal from the game was one of several worrying signs for Liverpool during a game in which they largely controlled their chances but failed to reach a decision.
As reported by Liverpool World, Slott acknowledged the Dutch midfielder’s problems in the post-match press conference.
“He twisted his ankle so he took it off. Are we worried about the injury? We’ll have to see how it goes tomorrow because we have to play again in three days. We have to play three games in seven days, like we had to do after the last international break, but it doesn’t take long for the players to recover.”
Arne Slott will hope the injury is not serious
The circumstances of the injury are also important. Grabenbirch has been through the international tournament with a hamstring problem.
Apart from the game against Grabenwerch, the result against United showed deeper concerns about Liverpool’s defensive structure and attacking ruthlessness, but an injury to a key midfielder is the last thing Slott needs at the moment.
Given how important Grabenwerch is to the Reds, Slott will be hoping the Dutch midfielder’s injury is not serious.
The Reds will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League in midweek, but Slott will be hoping to avoid a fifth straight defeat for his team.
