Atletico Madrid star Julián Álvarez is reportedly determined to leave the club after last night’s 4-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League.
The Argentina international has produced world-class performances during his time at Atlético, but previously struggled for minutes during his time at Manchester City, but still showed some potential.
According to Sport, Alvarez is on the radar of Barcelona but is likely to face a transfer fee of €200 million if he leaves his current club.
Still, the paper adds that last night’s result at the Emirates Stadium means Alvarez wants to leave Atlético, and many big names are sure to be wary.
Julian Alvarez has emerged as a transfer target for Liverpool
Alvarez is certainly too good to play for a side currently struggling in the Champions League, such as Atletico, so it’s no wonder an elite team like Liverpool are interested in the 25-year-old.
Football Insider reports that Liverpool are linked with Alvarez, while the Telegraph reports that there were talks to sign a swap deal for Luis Diaz while he was still at Man City.
Since then, Liverpool have spent money on signing Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike as new strikers, but could they turn to Alvarez again if he leaves in the summer of 2026?
Isak hasn’t had a good start at Anfield and it’s still early days, but some decision-makers at the club may see Alvarez as an upgrade.
Alvarez has already shone in the Premier League, albeit only as a City international, and is still young enough to have the potential to develop even further.
LFC fans will no doubt be keeping an eye on Alvarez’s situation, but perhaps that is more realistic as Sport have linked him to Barça and should immediately think about bringing in a long-term replacement for the aging Robert Lewandowski, whose contract expires at the end of this season.
