Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has opened up about his decision to turn down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia in the summer transfer window, revealing how a heart-to-heart conversation with his wife Ana helped shape his choice.
The United midfielder attracted interest from the Saudi Professional League in the summer, but has decided to remain in the Premier League to continue his career at Old Trafford.
Despite his woes at the club, Fernandes remains determined to remain loyal to the Premier League side.
The Portuguese midfielder admitted in an interview with Mail Sport that although the money package on offer was “huge”, the move did not match his career ambitions or sense of unfinished business at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes rejects Saudi move in summer
Fernandes’ name was among several high-profile stars linked with a move to the Saudi Professional League earlier this year, as the club, backed by considerable financial resources, looked to attract Europe’s elite.
The midfielder admitted that he had received a formal offer, saying it was life-changing financially, but also admitted that his wife’s opinion was decisive.
“The first thing she said was, ‘Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve at the club?'” She knows I haven’t. ” Fernandez made the revelation, as reported by Ben Jacobs.
The exchange struck a chord with United’s captain. Despite the lure of a higher salary and more comfortable lifestyle, Fernandes was aware that his journey at Man United was still incomplete.
He went on to acknowledge the size of the offer:
“Obviously I don’t think they were too happy about me turning down the offer. It was a very good offer in terms of salary, so I accepted it. Everything was big for me. It made a big difference.”
Manchester United’s captain remained loyal to his team
While some players have opted for Saudi Arabia’s riches, Fernandes’ refusal shows deep professional pride and deep commitment to the club’s current project.
United would have received a huge transfer fee for the midfielder, money that could have helped them invest in several positions in the team, but they decided to stay.
Neither Fernandes nor the player had any intention of leaving the club.
Since joining the club, the Portuguese midfielder has been the team’s best player, regularly scoring and assisting in important moments.
His achievements and leadership are vital to the club and could be the difference for the club this season.
