Despite scoring 40 points against the San Antonio Spurs, many NBA fans felt that Cam Thomas wasn’t playing right for the Brooklyn Nets.
Cam Thomas is one of those players who has gotten a lot of attention for the way he negotiates with teams. The restricted free agent tried to get the best contract possible from the Brooklyn Nets.
Thomas told the Nets he wants $40 million to re-sign him. GM Sean Marks clearly didn’t see Thomas as having that much value.
As a result, Thomas signed a $6 million qualifying offer, proving he’s worth the money he’ll ask for next year and giving him the freedom to decide on his future.
And in tonight’s game against the San Antonio Spurs, Thomas had a strong scoring performance with 40 points. But NBA fans felt it was still a negative sign of his bad habits.
Despite Cam Thomas scoring 40 points, the Brooklyn Nets would end up losing to the San Antonio Spurs by about 11 points. His zero assists in this game was not a great impression.
Some fans criticized Thomas for holding up an empty number. One fan pointedly said, “When it was 110-107 there was no scoring in crunch time, but Cam can’t ever make a crunch time shot.”
Meanwhile, another fan simply said, “I would never want to be his teammate.”
Thomas would receive unflattering comparisons, with one fan writing him as “the new Jamal Crawford.”
The comparisons don’t end there, as another fan claims, “Buddy wants to be Kobe.”
And finally, one fan insisted, “He’s going to keep doing this, and they’re going to keep losing, and he’s going to wonder why they don’t give him a big contract.”
Cam Thomas can score very well, but this fact has never been up for debate. At the moment, Thomas is considered one of the best pure isolation scorers in the NBA.
The problem, however, is that he is a high-volume shooter and requires a lot of attempts on the night when he feels like he’s in a rhythm.
It may be difficult to do that on this mid-major Brooklyn Nets team, but Thomas must prove he can score big and help his team win.
If he can’t convince teams about this, he won’t get the big contract he’s looking for and will have to settle for a smaller deal next summer.
