Aprilia has announced that 2024 MotoGP World Champion Jorge Martin will miss the upcoming Portuguese Grand Prix as he continues to recover from injury.

The Spaniard was sidelined after the Japanese Grand Prix with his fourth serious injury of the year, an accident that also involved his Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi at Turn 1 at the start of the Motegi sprint.

Jorge Martin suffered a displaced shoulder fracture that required surgery and has been sidelined ever since.

His recovery is progressing and Martin is training again, but Aprilia has not said when he will return.

However, it has been confirmed that he will miss next weekend’s Portuguese Grand Prix in Portimao to focus on his recovery.

Aprilia has not yet announced whether it will take part in next week’s final race of 2025, the Valencia Grand Prix, or whether it will take part in post-race testing on Tuesday.

He was replaced by test rider Lorenzo Savadori in recent rounds and looks set to continue into Portugal. However, Aprilia has not yet confirmed this.

Martin suffered a season-ending injury just 13 laps into testing at Sepang in February, missing the opening three races due to a training accident.

On his return to action at the Qatar Grand Prix, he crashed towards the end of the main race and was rear-ended by Fabio Di Giannantonio in his VR46 Ducati.

This left him with multiple injuries and he was unable to race again until the Czech Grand Prix before the summer break.

Between Qatar and Brno, the 2024 world champion had a contract dispute with Aprilia and left the brand a year early.

He sought to argue that the termination clause in the contract could be triggered because certain outcome criteria were not met.

Aprilia disputed this and threatened to fight it in court, and Martin ultimately committed to a second year in office in 2026.

In total, Martin has only completed six of the 20 races up to 2025, with his best result being fourth at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

He is not the only world champion confirmed to miss the upcoming Portuguese Grand Prix.
