Justin Langer revealed how one line of Sanjiv Goenka forced him to finish a three-year break and return to cricket as a coach. The former Australian opener was replaced by Andy Flower Lucknow Super Giants Head coach in July 2023.
It was the first time Justin Langer has accepted a coaching role from the IPL franchise.
Langer coached Perth Scorcher in the BBL
The role of the IPL was new to the Australian greats, but for him there was no shortage of coaching experience. Under his coaching, the Perth Scorchers won Big Bash League Title 3 times.
He also enjoyed a successful stint as head coach of the Australian men’s team. Under him, Australia won its first T20 World Cup title in 2021.
He resigned as Australia’s head coach in early 2022, and after nearly three years of leaving cricket, a conversation with Sanjiv Goenka convinced him to accept his coaching offer.

Langer reveals Goenka’s words
“So I’ll sit with (Sanjiv) Goenka and have this conversation. He’s a calm and lovely person and a very successful businessman. I know what he’s saying at the end. The last thing he says – “Justin, you had a very successful coaching career. But you’ve faced it.” Justin Langer His former teammate Michael Clark spoke on 23 Cricket podcasts.
The opportunity to build a successful team from scratch was very appealing to Langer, and he finally accepted the offer from Goenka.

To put it more, Justin Langer also scraped down rumors suggesting Goenka plays a role in cricket decisions beyond the boardroom.
“There was no stress from the Goenka family. My experience with the team proved that those perceptions were the exact opposite,” Langer said.
Langer’s first season with LSG didn’t go well. For the first time since the IPL journey began in 2022, the Lucknow-based outfit was unable to qualify for the playoffs. They decided to finish at the seventh place and release the captain, KL was satisfied.
However, they started the ongoing season with a strong note. LSG has won three of its first five games and is currently in the fifth spot in the points table. They look like a strong unit so far and are looking to go all this season.
