As the Premier League heads for an international break, the title race has already been shaped into two horse contests between Arsenal and Liverpool, with many experts shifting their forecasts in light of recent results.
But Alan Shearer is not yet ready to abandon his preseason pick.
Arsenal moved forward temporarily before Liverpool, but Shearer told listeners he still supports the Reds, at least for now.
Liverpool have lost two consecutive Premier League matches, both of which have taken on late goals from the opposition.
Arsenal is currently ahead of the Premier League title race
Edinketia’s late winner at Selhurst Park and Chelsea’s Estebao’s winner at Stamford Bridge placed a dent in Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes early in the race.
Meanwhile, Gunners have discovered momentum this season. The only loss of their season came against the Reds at Anfield when Dominique Schizoboschlei scored that incredible free kick.
The former England striker has explained that the rest is a football podcast, acknowledging Arsenal’s strong start and that he was “strongly impressed” with Mikel Arteta’s side.
However, Shearer revealed that the seven games are still early samples and that they will not change their overall views until a long-term match gives clearer evidence that who is more likely to win.
Gary Reinker mentioned how all of them on the podcast chose the Reds to win the league early in the season and whether Shear would change the predictions now.
Shearer replied:
“I’m not going to change my mind yet, Gaz. I might do it after 12 games, but I’m very impressed with Arsenal.”
Alan Shearer still supports Liverpool to win the league
Liverpool’s recent dip, back-to-back defeats to Crystal Palace and Chelsea, have opened the door for Arsenal to push their claims, and experts have flagged it as a source of short-term concerns about choice and defensive issues at Anfield.
But what’s important is that Liverpool’s fate could quickly reverse when new signatures like Alexander Isaac Settle and Florian Wiltz re-register his best form.
That possibility is why Shearer still considers Liverpool a valid favorite despite Arsenal’s momentum.
Arsenal has gained praise and momentum, but the title fight is very lively if Liverpool can settle its shape from the new additions and stabilize its defense.
Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal fans could be “very optimistic” about what they’re doing “quickly”
